Rep. Chris Taylor statement on AJR-81, latest ALEC scheme to hit Wisconsin
Yesterday, Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 81 passed out of the Committee on Campaigns and Elections on a party-line vote.
MADISON – Yesterday, Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 81 passed out of the Committee on Campaigns and Elections on a party-line vote. AJR 81 calls on Congress to initiate a Constitutional Convention for the purposes of amending the federal constitution to require a balanced budget amendment. AJR 81 is part of a “Convention of States” campaign launched at the August, 2013 American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) conference Rep. Taylor attended. This campaign aims to amend the federal constitution in a number of areas to limit the power of the federal government and prevent federal mandates upon the states. Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“I am not at all surprised to see the latest ALEC scheme in Wisconsin, as so many of the policies that are passed by the majority party in this legislature come from ALEC. The “Convention of States” project, led by a founder of the Tea Party Patriots, aims to curtail the power of the federal government to protect the environment, consumers and workers. The leaders of this particular project even speculated that if the U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t get less liberal, a constitutional amendment might be needed to abolish the high court.
“AJR 81 comes right out of the ‘Convention of States’ workshop and materials presented at ALEC where state legislators were promised bundled campaign contributions and grassroots support if they joined this effort to amend the federal constitution. I am alarmed that this effort is now making its way through the Wisconsin legislature and is tentatively scheduled to be considered by the full Assembly next Tuesday. Ironically, bills to increase Wisconsin’s structural deficit will also be considered and likely passed by the majority party on the same day.”
Rep. Chris Taylor joined ALEC and attended their annual conference last year in an effort to learn about the ties between ALEC and many of the laws enacted through the Wisconsin Legislature.
