American Family Insurance supports Milwaukee revitalization efforts at Sherman Phoenix
Funds will be used for new STEAM & Dream program for students and young adults
(Madison, Wisconsin) (Dec. 17, 2019) – American Family Insurance has committed $50,000 to support a new “STEAM & Dream” program at Sherman Phoenix, a neighborhood and entrepreneurial business hub in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park area. The funds will be used to inform, inspire and support K-12 students and young adults in the careers of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).
Sherman Phoenix seeks healing and prosperity
Sherman Phoenix literally rose from the ashes after civil unrest in the Sherman Park area as a way for the city to move forward and begin healing. Recently celebrating its one-year anniversary, the objective of Sherman Phoenix is to generate positive economic and social returns in communities of color. It provides high-quality space for entrepreneurs of small businesses offering diverse foods, wellness services and cultural activities in addition to community space for art exhibits, films and cultural events.
Because the space has also succeeded in attracting and bringing neighbors together in search of new economic opportunities, American Family decided to partner with Sherman Phoenix to offer educational and training opportunities to community members.
The goals and location of Sherman Phoenix align closely with American Family’s increased focus and presence in Milwaukee, where the company is committed to partnering with community organizations, colleges and other partners to create meaningful economic and social impact in several areas.
“The American Family strategic partnerships team is focused on driving diversity, inclusion and equity, and developing a strong talent pipeline,” said Leana Nakielski, American Family Insurance strategic partnerships director. “In partnership with organizations like Sherman Phoenix and supporting programs in the STEAM disciplines, our goal is to provide opportunities to advance in these careers, access new employment opportunities, and help our youth prosper in education.”
“The partnership with American Family creates a significant response to what our neighbors have identified as a need,” said Juli Kaufmann, co-developer, Sherman Phoenix. “The ability to cultivate knowledge and general exposure in the STEAM arenas through the new STEAM & Dream program will allow us to honor our commitment to lifting the desires of our community members.”The STEAM & Dream program supported by American Family will begin in 2020.
