Happy Holidays: Fired transit worker gets Scrooged
Statement from Alderman Bob Donovan December 27, 2013
Milwaukee and the world need more people like William H. Bierman Jr., but don’t tell that to the higher-ups at the Milwaukee County Transit System.
Mr. Bierman was promptly fired by the bosses at MCTS because of his actions in trying to prevent physical harm to a woman who was being accosted by a man near S. 2nd St. and W. National Ave. this fall. The former bus supervisor was on duty when he spotted the man grabbing the woman and intervened to keep the man away from the woman.
He was fired, but in my mind he deserves a medal! I thought the holidays are a time of helping and giving to others – not the time of being Scrooge-like to an employee who does the right thing.
In an age of self-indulgent and self-centered behavior, Mr. Bierman stepped up, got involved and did the right thing. For every work policy there ought to be an exception or two, and certainly in this case it is obvious that he was doing the right thing to help this woman and to prevent an assault (or something even worse).
I sure hope there’s a Mr. Bierman around when one of my loved ones is in danger.
Shame on the Ebenezer Scrooge stooges at the county transit system.
