Rep. Anderson Addresses Republican Inaction on Gun Reform
"It is shameful that our state’s Republican lawmakers have once again disregarded our Governor’s attempt to address gun violence in our state."
FITCHBURG – Yesterday, Governor Tony Evers called the state legislature into a special session to take up bills establishing universal background checks on the purchase of firearms and establishing Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) in Wisconsin. After Republicans neglected their constitutional duty to debate and vote on these proposals, Representative Jimmy Anderson released the following statement:
“It is shameful that our state’s Republican lawmakers have once again disregarded our Governor’s attempt to address gun violence in our state. Time and time again, Republicans have disregarded the very real concerns of our constituents.
“Voting yes on these bills would have saved lives. 80% of Wisconsin voters support these measures because they know universal background checks and ERPOs help prevent suicides, domestic violence, and mass shootings. By refusing to even discuss these proposals, Republicans have made it clear to Wisconsinites that they are not interested in trying to solve the problem.
“I am proud to join my Democratic colleagues in supporting these common-sense measures to protect Wisconsin communities from gun violence. The status quo is no longer enough. We must act to make Wisconsin a safer place to live.”
