MADISON – In the wake of recent mass shootings across the country, momentum for action on gun safety continues to grow. Democrats have answered the pleas of Wisconsin residents and introduced a proposal to close the gun show loophole that allows convicted felons and domestic abusers to purchase firearms. Despite overwhelming public support to close the gun show loophole and expand background checks, Senator Darling refuses to say whether or not she supports the proposal.

“It is indefensible that Senator Darling would preserve a loophole that allows convicted felons and domestic abusers to purchase firearms,” said Katie Iliff, SSDC Executive Director. “There have already been too many tragic incidents in Wisconsin as a result of this dangerous loophole. Wisconsin legislators can, and must, do more to reduce gun violence and keep our communities safe. Senator Darling’s refusal to prioritize the safety of Wisconsinites and acknowledge the gun violence epidemic shows that she is just another rubber stamp for the NRA.”

A Marquette Law Poll found 80 percent of Wisconsinites – including the vast majority of gun owners – support closing this gun show loophole. Senator Darling has a record of voting against measures to strengthen gun safety measures including reinstating the 48-hour waiting period, prohibiting the sale of bump stocks, and closing the loophole to prevent convicted felons and domestic abusers from purchasing firearms.
