The Public Works Committee today unanimously recommended for approval legislation that paves the way for the renovation of a W. Fond du Lac Ave. building to house the city Office of African American Affairs.

The committee today voted 5-0 to recommend adoption of Common Council file #190772, a resolution authorizing transfer of departmental jurisdiction and responsibility for the city-owned property at 4830 W. Fond du Lac Ave. in the 7th Aldermanic District from the Department of City Development to the Department of Public Works for use by the Department of Administration.

Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, sponsor of the resolution and also the sponsor of legislation creating the Office of African American Affairs, said if the measure is adopted by the full Common Council on September 24, renovations will then proceed to create the permanent space for the OAAA. “This action paves the way for the Council to give final approval to creating an important asset and resource center for the community,” he said.

“I am pleased and I look forward to seeing the building serving as a place where community members can access resources and services so we can move closer to a Milwaukee where all African Americans can live life with a sense of dignity, purpose and unlimited potential,” Alderman Rainey said.

The OAAA office will house multiple services and organizations –city government departments and nonprofits. The office will enable residents to access quality of life services in one location including job training, employment, health, child support, driver’s license recovery and more on a regular basis.

The full Council meeting on September 24 will be televised live on the City Channel (Channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and on AT&T U-Verse Channel 99) in the City of Milwaukee. It can also be viewed via streaming video on the City website at milwaukee.gov/Channel25. –
