Milwaukee, Wis. (June 18, 2019) – Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers today announced it is hosting a one-of-a kind south side community health event, Sixteenth Street Bike Day: Community Health in Motion, with special guest appearances from four Milwaukee Brewers Players and Wives.  The free event, which promotes healthy, active lifestyles through safe, family biking, will take place Saturday, June 29th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kosciuszko Park, 2201 S. 7th Street.

To make it possible for families to exercise through biking, a highlight of Sixteenth Street Bike Day will be the give-away of hundreds of bikes and helmets to children and adults living in the community.  The event will also offer bike tune-ups, learn to ride clinics, Zumba and Salsa dancing, kids’ games, healthy food, safe car seat instruction, bike safety education, demonstrations from WIC nutritionists and more – all FREE.

Community health is at the center of Sixteenth Street’s mission and work. “Creating community-led opportunities for south side residents to come together to learn about and engage in healthy activity is extremely important to moving individuals and the community as a whole towards sustainable, healthy change,” said Tatiana Maida, Manager of Sixteenth Street’s Healthy Choices Program and creator of the Community Bike Day idea.  “What better way than safe biking to get individuals and families physically active!”

The need and desire for these local opportunities are proven through past years’ Bike Day attendance of more than 1,000 community members. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever.

“Our players and wives are excited to be able to connect with kids and families in the community to encourage healthy activity and movement,” said Katina Shaw, Vice President of Community Relations & Family Liaison with the Milwaukee Brewers. “We’re proud to partner with Sixteenth Street and contribute to the wave of positive change in this great neighborhood.”

A true collaboration, dozens of local businesses and organizations are joining together to support Sixteenth Street Bike Day. Health education, activities for adults and children and bike tune-ups will be offered. Healthy fruits and vegetables will be provided by El Rey Market and Pete’s Fruit Market. A variety of participating organizations will also be on hand to share healthy lifestyle information and education. This event was made possible by lead sponsor, Anthem, and partnering sponsors Lake Express, Marjorie L. Christiansen Foundation, MyChoice Family Care and Rebel.
