Statement from Alderman Bob Donovan on two injured MPD officers
March 29, 2019
Once again, two of the Milwaukee Police Department’s finest officers were injured in the line of duty early this morning when a man driving his car ran through a stop sign hitting the MPD squad car. The officers – one with six years on the force, the other with five years – were transported to a local hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. While this incident is still under investigation, MPD believes the driver was operating his car while under the influence and has been taken into custody.
I wish a full and speedy recovery to both officers, and offer my thoughts and prayers to them and their families, friends and colleagues on the MPD force.
While it is easy to blame such accidents on a lack of traffic controls or signs directing motorists, the fact of the matter is that far too many people are driving carelessly, recklessly, and without concern for their fellow travelers in cars and buses, on bicycles, and as pedestrians. All the traffic controls in the world will not work as intended if people choose not to obey them, as in this case where the perpetrator blew through a stop sign.
When you add alcohol and/or drugs to the situation, our public safety is at an even greater risk.
My solution – prosecute these reckless drivers to the fullest extent of the law when they choose to get behind the wheel while drunk or high. Yes, it’s a choice – your choice! – to break the law and put the safety of others as well as yourself a great risk when you operate a motor vehicle while impaired. If you chose this path, you can and should go to jail for a very long time.
So let’s all take responsibility for our actions, and do the right thing. It will save your life and the lives of those around you.
