Logsdon Budget Amendment Ensures Repairs to College Ave. Bridges

MILWAUKEE – The County Board adopted (13 – 5) an amendment from Supervisor Patti Logsdon to fund the repairs of two badly deteriorated bridges along College Ave., at 31st Street and 34th Street, as part of the 2019 Milwaukee County budget today.
“Before taking office this spring, I knew these bridges were in bad shape and that last year they had been delayed in favor of other projects. After discussing the situation with the county’s Department of Transportation, it became clear the problem was worse than I thought. I’m grateful to my colleagues on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors as well as staff in the Department of Transportation and research staff in the Comptroller’s office for supporting my amendment and ensuring these repairs will be completed in 2019,” said Logsdon.
The two bridges were so deteriorated that the Milwaukee County Highway Maintenance Department placed concrete highway dividers, known as Jersey barriers, along one bridge to substitute for the rusted-out railings. The bridges span a branch of the Root River.
County Executive Chris Abele proposed repairing both bridges with his 2018 budget proposal, but the project was delayed when the county board moved funding elsewhere due to budgetary constraints.
Motivated by concerns for public safety, Supervisor Logsdon worked diligently with the Milwaukee County Transportation Department to re-evaluate the condition of the bridges and find a funding solution.
Supervisor Logsdon serves on the Judiciary, Safety, and General Services Committee and was also concerned about the liability posed by the hazards, which could lead to additional costs for county taxpayers.
The repairs are budgeted at $250,000 and expected to be completed in 2019.
