MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker was quick to publicly praise Donald Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, saying the day of his nomination, “… he fits the criteria I look for in judicial candidates.” and signing on to a letter with fellow GOP governors praising his “ …record of upholding the Constitution and distinguished credentials.” One Wisconsin Now Research Director Joanna Beilman-Dulin today called on Walker to clarify his position on Kavanaugh’s nomination in light of a woman coming forward saying he sexually assaulted her.

“There were already red flags with Brett Kavanaugh when he refused to give straight answers about his positions on women’s reproductive health care rights,” commented Beilman-Dulin. “This latest information about sexual assault is a serious, disqualifying allegation.”

Over the weekend a woman who knew the nominee in high school went on the record and has said she is willing to testify publicly that she was sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh at a party.

Kavanaugh has previously drawn concern for refusing to make clear his position on women’s reproductive health care issues, including overturning the Roe v. Wade decision that prohibits enforcement of a Wisconsin state law that would criminalize abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. He also appeared to endorse the view medically inaccurate view that birth control is abortion inducing.

Beilman-Dulin noted Kavanaugh is not the only court nominee with out of touch views Walker has stood by. In 2015, Gov. Walker appointed Rebecca Bradley to the State Supreme Court and subsequently supported her 2016 election bid for a 10 year term. In addition to having expressed vile homophobia in her writings, Bradley opined that birth control was murder and suggested that women play a role in date rape.

She concluded, “Scott Walker put a person on the Wisconsin Supreme Court who expressed her abhorrent and ill informed views in writing. Will he also continue to stand by Brett Kavanaugh in light of his evasions and serious allegations about his personal conduct? We deserve a straight answer, and we deserve it now.”
