Governor Walker Celebrates the Opening of United Community Center Acosta Middle School’s New Facility
Commends school for focusing on high-demand fields: science-technology and skilled trades
MILWAUKEE – Governor Scott Walker today toured the new facility for United Community Center (UCC) Acosta Middle School in Milwaukee with Ricardo Diaz, the executive director of the school, and Santiago Navarro, the school’s principal. UCC Acosta focuses on preparing students for future work in science-technology and in the skilled trades.
“Wisconsin students are our future leaders, and we want to provide a quality education for every student across the state no matter where they live,” said Governor Walker. “It is great to see Wisconsin schools, like UCC Acosta, opening the door for students to gain skills in high-demand fields. Through the work of our schools, our historic investment into education, and our continued commitment to our kids, we will see more and more kids gain new skills that will prepare them for college, career, and life.”
UCC Acosta Middle School is a nonprofit charter school that opened in 2016 with 55 students. This year the school is opening their doors on a brand-new facility. For the 2018-2019 school year, there are 160 students, but the school is expected to continue growing to as large as 250 students by 2021.
The State of Wisconsin was supportive of the creation of the middle school through numerous state grants including a Fast Forward Grant, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) nursing partnership, Department of Justice (DOJ) School Safety Grant, and Charter School Implementation Grant from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
