Health Commissioner McManus Made Adjustments to City’s STIs Clinic for Protection of Community
City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia McManus recently discovered that registered nurses were performing services at the Keenan Health Center’s STIs clinic that were outside of their scope of practice.
City of Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia McManus recently discovered that registered nurses were performing services at the Keenan Health Center’s STIs clinic that were outside of their scope of practice, as specified by their licenses. After investigating this matter, Commissioner McManus directed the staff to discontinue the inappropriate services immediately. This change occurred on August 8, 2018 after Commissioner McManus met with a City Attorney and informed the Mayor’s Chief of Staff.
Unbeknownst to Commissioner McManus, staff independently made the decision to close the Keenan STI Clinic on August 8th. This wrong action disrupted all services at the STIs clinic, not just the inappropriate ones. Closing the clinic was of concern because the STIs nurses have the ability to perform additional services within their scope of practice, other than those that were being questioned. After finding out about the closure, McManus inquired about the matter and directed the clinic to be reopened immediately. The STIs clinic reopened at the normal time on August 9th.
New nursing protocols have been written by medical staff and approved by Commissioner McManus. The City of Milwaukee Health Department is aggressively seeking nurse practitioners who can perform full scopes of service to meet the needs of the community.
Further details are not available due to pending personnel matters.
