A dangerous ride that must be made safer

Statement of Alderman Khalif J. Rainey - April 24, 2018

By - Apr 24th, 2018 01:06 pm

There is new data about the most dangerous roads for bicyclists across the U.S. and No. 1 on the list in Milwaukee runs through the 7th Aldermanic District on W. Capitol Dr. from N. 35th St. to W. Fond du Lac Ave.

The data – from www.chicagoworkcomp.com – shows that the less than two-mile stretch of W. Capitol Dr. from 35th to Fond du Lac is the worst stretch of roadway in the city for bicyclists.

This is unacceptable and comes not long after the Department of Transportation ranked 35th and Capitol (also in the 7th District) as the most dangerous intersection in the State of Wisconsin.

I am calling on the city and the state to do more to make the streets in the 7th District safer for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. We need engineers studying ways to separate and/or better protect pedestrians and bicyclists from vehicle traffic along W. Capitol Dr. as well as ways of slowing traffic along Capitol Dr. in general.

The public’s safety and welfare must be our top priority and I intend to push for greater safety along W. Capitol Dr. and across my district.
