McBride Announces Run for Wisconsin State Assembly

Democrat will challenge Rep. Rob Hutton for suburban Milwaukee seat

WAUWATOSA – Dennis McBride, the former President of the Wauwatosa Common Council, announced today that he will challenge Rep. Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) for Wisconsin State Assembly District 13. The district includes Elm Grove and parts of Wauwatosa, Milwaukee, West Allis and Brookfield.

“This year is critical for our state and our nation,” McBride said. “For too long there has been a lack of vision and responsible leadership. We must restore civility and balance to our political system, strengthen our communities and increase opportunity.  I want to make our government work for all Wisconsinites.”

McBride said his priorities are creating family-sustaining jobs, investing in our children and their public schools, repairing and maintaining our infrastructure, restoring fiscal responsibility, protecting Wisconsin’s natural environment and returning local control to Wisconsin’s cities and towns.

McBride’s candidacy is a natural next step.  “I’ve dedicated my life to serving my community,” he said.

He served 10 years on the Wauwatosa Common Council and 15 years on the Wauwatosa Civil Service Commission.  A co-founder of the Support Our Schools (SOS) Wauwatosa advocacy group, he also was a founding board member of Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool, Inc., which provided a new community swimming pool for Wauwatosa. For three years, he served as the public member of the State of Wisconsin Retirement Board.

A retired lawyer, McBride served as a Law Clerk to U.S. District Judge Terence Evans, worked for private law firms and taught part-time at Marquette University Law School. He spent 24 years as a Senior Trial Attorney and Supervisory Trial Attorney for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

“As a lawyer, I represented both individuals and corporations,” McBride said. “I’m especially proud to have represented victims of job discrimination, including, for example, women who were sexually harassed or passed over for promotion.  I know how to make government work for the people.”

McBride served two terms as Wauwatosa Common Council President. He also served as Chair of the Council’s Financial Affairs Committee and the Transportation Affairs Committee.  He was a Director of the Wauwatosa Revolving Loan Fund Corporation, a member of the Wauwatosa Economic Development Advisory Committee and Common Council liaison to the Wauwatosa Historic Preservation Commission.

McBride earned a journalism degree from UW-Milwaukee, a master’s degree in public administration from Princeton University and a law degree from New York University. In 2012 he received UWM’s Alumni Citizenship Award. He has been rated “AV Preeminent” (highest for legal ability and professional ethics) in a legal community poll, and in 2014 was named a Fellow of the Wisconsin Bar Foundation.  A member of UWM’s Athletic Hall of Fame, he will be inducted into Wauwatosa East High School’s Hall of Fame in July. Among other feats, he twice won the Milwaukee Mayfair Marathon, predecessor to the Lakefront Marathon.

The primary for state elected offices will be held August 14. The general election will be on November 6.
