Measure would ban conversion therapy in Milwaukee
News release from Alderman Cavalier "Chevy" Johnson
At its meeting tomorrow the Public Safety and Health Committee will take up an ordinance prohibiting the practice of conversion therapy.
Common Council File No. 171760, sponsored by Alderman Cavalier “Chevy” Johnson, would make conversion therapy – the practice of trying to change a person’s sexual orientation and also known as reparative therapy – illegal in the City of Milwaukee.
“Conversion therapy is scientifically unfounded and has been refuted by virtually every major medical and psychological organization in the United States,” Alderman Johnson said. “The practice is often conducted in a violent and damaging manner and has been found to cause harmful effects including depression, suicidality, and substance abuse.”
“In my view the therapy on its face is an abdication of our community’s embrace of diversity,” he said.
The committee will meet tomorrow (Thursday, March 8) at 9 a.m. in room 301-B at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St.
The meeting will be televised live by the City Channel via streaming video on the city website at www.city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25. It can also be viewed on Spectrum Cable and on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee.
