Democrat’s Bill Restores Elections Commission Staff
Walker used a veto to slash staff of state’s watchdog agency.
Assembly Democrats are sponsoring a bill that would spend $304,100 to pay for five additional full-time staff positions at the state’s elections watchdog.
The measure, sponsored by Reps. Melissa Sargent, of Madison, and Eric Genrich, of Green Bay, would essentially reverse one of 99 vetoes made by Republican Gov. Scott Walker when he signed the 2017-19 state budget last week.
Walker said the full-time positions were not needed and that the commission could hire short-term employees to help during elections and other peak work periods.
Genrich and Sargent said the money and positions were added during Joint Finance Committee consideration of Walker’s proposed budget because the GOP-controlled committee felt that the commission was understaffed during the 2016 elections.
