MADISON, Wis. — Violent criminals who repeatedly steal vehicles will be held accountable under a bill passed by Wisconsin Senate Republicans, authored by Assistant Majority Leader Leah Vukmir, R–Brookfield, and Representative Joe Sanfelippo, R-New Berlin.

“We owe it to the citizens of Wisconsin to ensure the law properly addresses habitual criminality,” Vukmir said. “Carjacking has grown out of hand in recent years and it is time for the Legislature to take action in confronting this public safety concern. Enough is enough.”

Between 2013 and 2015, incidents of motor vehicle thefts increased 50%. In 2015, 11,087 individuals were victims of motor vehicle thefts. These victims were deprived of their personal property and endured personal trauma.

Senate Bill 58 creates increased penalties for repeat offenders and creates increased penalties for individuals that forcibly remove individuals from their vehicle.

“This bill is about protecting Wisconsinites,” Vukmir said. “Our constituents deserve to feel safe. To achieve that goal it is necessary to hold repeat offenders appropriately accountable. Our communities deserve more from us. Victims deserve more from us.”
