Urban Design and Development in Another Gritty City: Glasgow, Scotland
This presentation will summarize the United Kingdom’s urban design agenda, the urban renaissance agenda and the development and design during the recent development boom, focusing on Glasgow. The audience will receive the background and context of Glasgow – both its longer history and the period when its fortunes began to turn around from the late 1970s through to the early 1990s, before focusing on the late 1990s/21st century period. Glasgow and Milwaukee have some interesting parallels, which might generate a group discussion about the comparison and contrast of the two cities. There will be time allowed for questions and answers.
Speaker: Dr. Steven Tiesdell, a senior lecturer in public policy at the University of Glasgow
Dr. Tiesdell holds a PhD in urban planning, obtained from the University of Nottingham. He is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and is also a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He is the author of numerous publications and his research interests include urban design, urban development and regeneration, crime and safety, and public space.
