During his budget address this morning, Mayor Tom Barrett made an exciting announcement that will benefit residents of the 7th Aldermanic District and the city as a whole.

He said that the train company Talgo has received a $73 million contract from the City of Los Angeles to overhaul train cars for LA’s public transit system, and that the work will be carried out right here in Milwaukee at our Century City industrial park.

This is exciting news for the district I represent, because it will mean new jobs for local people and even more activity at bustling Century City.

For too long, the site has been a sad reminder of jobs that left town and lives that were shattered by the departure of A.O. Smith and Tower Automotive. But with extensive work, environmental remediation and a $35 million investment by the city, the 84-acre site has been redeveloped as an attractive business park that could someday feature up to 900 jobs.

Talgo’s decision to locate their new operations in Century City builds on the growing momentum there. Thank you to Mayor Barrett and his Department of City Development for the work they’ve done to maintain a relationship with Talgo, and I look forward to what’s next for Century City.

  1. Bill Sell says:

I hope we can have a city-wide party at the factory site, to welcome Talgo back. Make it loud and joyous, drums and music, dancing in the street. Food trucks and artists. Celebrate so some people in the distant capitol can hear us. We love having work; we love having transportation to work.
