Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele Announces New Bathroom Policy
“As of today, the restrooms in my office are gender neutral."
MILWAUKEE – In the wake of North Carolina HB 2 that mandates individuals use the restroom that corresponds with the gender they were assigned at birth, and amid reports that a similar proposal may be reconsidered in Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele today announced a new bathroom policy in the Milwaukee County Executive’s office – use whichever restroom you feel comfortable in.
Abele released the following statement:
“I want Milwaukee County to be a welcoming place for everyone, regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, religion, or what gender they identify with.
“Passing laws about who can use which bathroom is not only a mean-spirited and discriminatory intrusion on the rights of transgender individuals to fully participate in society, it is a tremendous waste of time and energy.
“That is why, as of today, the restrooms in my office are gender neutral. I want everyone who visits the county executive’s office to feel comfortable.”
County Executive Abele’s new restroom policy applies only to the county executive’s office. Abele looks forward to partnering with the County Board and other interested partners to find ways to make the County’s other facilities more inclusive.
