Statement: Burkina Faso and Iran Announcement

Russ Feingold released the following statement following the Burkina Faso attack and Iran’s release of American hostages.

“The tragic news from Burkina Faso is the latest reminder that we cannot simply address one threat at a time. The United States must combat terrorism with all of our resources — military, diplomatic, and financial — with a special emphasis on increasing our intelligence capabilities around the world. We keep America safe not by repeating the mistakes of the past with tens of thousands of ground troops deployed in the Middle East, but through a comprehensive national security strategy that eliminates threats to America and our allies.

“As implementation begins of the plan to prevent Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon, I am glad to hear that four Americans, including Marine veteran Amir Hekmati and Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, are coming home. As a country, our foreign policy must be comprehensive. While we welcome good news today, we must not take our eye off the ball as new threats emerge — not only from ISIS, but from al Qaeda and its affiliates like AQIM and al Shabaab.”
