Carroll faculty participate in national photography conference

WAUKESHA, WIS.—In an age of interconnectedness, photographers are no longer solitary practitioners peering at the world through the singular eye of the viewfinder. Rather, they are reaching outside of themselves more than at any point in history, to collaborate with other artists and writers in a broad array of ideas and media. The 2014 Society for Photographic Education conference, “Collaborative Exchanges: Photography in Dialogue,” celebrates the power of community and social exchange to propel new thinking in photographic practice.

Philip Krejcarek, professor of art at Carroll University, and John Garrison, assistant professor of English, have the honor of presenting at the conference. “When Photography and Writing Collide” will share innovative ideas for encouraging photography students to collaborate with writing majors in a team-taught course that includes creation and exhibition of print and digital books. This practice enables students to see how photography and text combine to enhance messaging, both for creative and documentary projects.

Additionally, Jen Moon, assistant professor of art, had three photographs accepted into the second annual International SPE Combined Caucus Juried Show, held in conjunction with the national conference. “Gaza, Iowa 5,” “Moscow, Iowa 1” and “Toronto, Iowa 1” are from Moon’s highly acclaimed “I’ve Been There: A Namesake Tour of Iowa” series. The exhibition reflects the diversity of LGBTQ, Multi-Cultural and Women’s Caucuses, and is displayed at Gormley Gallery, Notre Dame of Maryland University.
