The 17th Annual Festival of Films in French at UWM, Feb. 7-16, brings a rich array of French-language cinema to the Union Theatre. This year’s selection highlights four women filmmakers, Chantal Akerman, Lorraine Lévy, Maïwenn and Sophie Lellouche.

The festival also marks the centenary of World War I with Jean Renoir’s highly acclaimed “La Grande Illusion” (1937), the Dadaist short “Entr’acte” (1924), and Abel Gance’s silent classic “J’accuse” (1918), which will have live musical accompaniment.

The films take viewers across the globe from Canada and Senegal to Israel, Malaysia and Algeria. Hard-hitting dramas on pressing contemporary issues are paired with romantic flights of fancy.

The full schedule is at uwm.edu/cie/frenchfilm/. The films are in French or in French and other languages with English subtitles. All films are free and open to the public.

The festival is supported in part by the Québec Government Office in Chicago and Dr. Richard Stone, in addition to UWM’s French program and other interested academic programs. Community support is provided by Alliance Française of Milwaukee and SWAAF (Southeast Wisconsin Academic Alliance in French).
