MSO Pops 2013-14: Doc, American standards, love songs, trumpeters -- and the Indigo Girls!

The Milwaukee Symphony has announced its Pops slate for 2013-14. As it happens, three trumpeters — Byron Stripling, Doc Severinsen and Jeff Tyzik, will be featured over the course of the season. Pops Subscription Concerts
Ella, Louis & All That Jazz, Oct. 11-13: Louis Armstrong, in the 1930s, made jazz the language of American popular music in the 1920s. Ella Fitzgerald sustained it into the gave jazz its greatest voice. MSO Pops, guest vocalist Marva Hicks and Byron Stripling — a trumpeter-singer and Armstrong scholar — will pay tribute to them and to Fats Waller. Waller, a key song writer of the era, gave them both plenty of material.
Holiday Pops Spectacular, Dec. 6-8: Season after season, it remains Milwaukee’s favorite holiday

Doc’s Back, Jan. 3-5: The MSO’s beloved Principal Pops Conductor Emeritus Doc Severinsen returns with red-hot renditions of Great American standards.
Valentine Romance, Feb. 14-16 (of course): Soprano Lisa Vroman, best known for her many performances of Phantom of the Opera, sings love songs to fit the season.
St. Patrick’s Day Celebration with Cherish the Ladies, March 14 – 16: Conductor Michael Krajewski and special guests Cherish the Ladies perform Emerald Isle favorites.
Patriotic Pops, June 13-15: Guest conductor — and trumpeter — Jeff Tyzik leads the Milwaukee Symphony and Chorus stirring John Philip Sousa spectaculars in red, white and blue.

Indigo Girls, Oct. 24: For the first time ever, the Indigo Girls combine their superb songwriting and soulful style with orchestral arrangements. At the Milwaukee Theatre.
The Wizard of Oz, April 12-13: Conductor Sarah Hicks, who led the MSO in a West Side Story screening with live music this season, returns to do the same with Wizard, with original vocals intact.
