This week’s Art Date is as much about learning as looking. Check out an exhibition and gallery talk about Elbridge Kingsley, a demonstration of rug weaving and repair, plus a panel discussion on the transition from artist’s studio to exhibition space.

Elbridge Kingsley was an American artist active in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Though his name may not ring many bells with nonspecialists today, he is renowned for his extraordinary skills in wood carving. Kinglsey’s oeuvre centers on landscape prints of exquisite nuance and detail. This exhibition will highlight original proofs and commissioned works, with a gallery talk to be given at 5:30 p.m. by curator Elizabeth Powell-Siercks.

The current exhibition at Villa Terrace, Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia draws attention to images that reflect contemporary military action, created in a manner which dates back centuries. As a supplement to this exhibition, master rug restorer Rakhoda Beni will give a demonstration of rug weaving and repair. Bezhad Shabahang of Shabahang & Sons Persian Carpets will also be available for evaluations of hand-woven rugs. If you have a rug and questions about it, you are invited to bring it along.

Current Tendencies III Colloquium: Moving From Studio to Exhibition 
Helfaer Theatre, Marquette University Campus

As part of the events surrounding the Current Tendencies III: Artists from Milwaukee  exhibition, students from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design will participate in a day of activities with the featured artists. The day will wrap up with a moderated conversation on the process of developing work in the studio and preparing for an exhibition. This part of the program is open to the public and offers a view into the working life of an artist.
