There are some unique events in the Milwaukee art world this week, including the kick-off of Digital Billboard Art Month, musical allusions to A Working Ranch, plus plenty of studios and galleries to see in ArtWalk 2013.

October kicks off with digital billboard art shown on gleaming signs from October 1 to 10. Eighteen billboards in the Milwaukee metro area will show the work of local artists, an innovative project that is the first of its kind in the country.

Thursday marks the Milwaukee Art Museum’s monthly free day, sponsored by Target. Drop in to check out the museum’s permanent collection and the tattoo flash art exhibit featuring the work of Amund Dietzel; the show ends October 13.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5
Jim Brozek’s photographs of ranch life are the inspiration for a concert this weekend at the Grohmann Museum.
A Working Ranch / A Day at the Races

The current exhibition at the Grohmann Museum is Jim Brozek’s photographic exhibition, A Working Ranch, which documents the experiences of cowboys on the trail and in the corral. The concert, A Day at the Races, is a musical performance featuring Liszt’s Grand Gallop, Chopin’s Fantasie Impromtu, Grieg’s Piano Concerto, and American cowboy songs as an accompaniment to this exhibition.
Advance tickets for the performance are $20, $15 for Grohmann Museum members, and $25 the day of the show. For more information see the Grohmann Museum website.

ArtWalk 2013
Riverwest Artists Association
ArtWalk 2013 will travel through 21 sites and the work of approximately 90 artists, offering an extensive tour of Riverwest’s art galleries, studios, homes and businesses. Maps will be available at Art Bar (722 E. Burleigh), Jazz Gallery (926 E. Center), Public House (815 E. Locust), and Riverwest Co-Op (733 E. Clarke). Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, kids, and seniors. A reception will be held at Jazz Gallery from 5:30-9 p.m. on Saturday.

I was at the opening of the Digital Billboard event at Inova, with talks by alderman Nic Kovac and the head of Clear Channel, among others, and saw all of them in the screening room afterwards, and then made a trek to North and Oakland to see Kenn Kwint’s work. The following day I was near 76th and Coldspring and saw Colleen Kassner’s (of The Grand Avenue Club) paintings. At Inova we were all given maps. as to where the artworks were, in 20 places around the city. I wonder if everyone knows that Milwaukee is the only city around the country that is doing this right now (artists’ work on many digital billboards)?
