The Madison Central Library is reopening and patrons are anxiously awating the celebration. The new library has been designed not only as a house for books, but with dedicated art spaces. About 100 artists, including Niki Johnson, will have work displayed in the galleries and throughout the building. DJs and local food round out the evening. Be advised that the 800 tickets available online have been sold out, but some tickets will be available at the door.

Curators Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins have brought together a group of extraordinary examples of Asian textiles in Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia at Villa Terrace Art Museum.

Curators Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins have brought together extraordinary examples of Asian textiles in this traveling exhibition. The woven rugs counter traditional, nonfigurative designs by representing images of contemporary history through portraits, cityscapes, and scenes reflecting military presences and conflicts.
Breaking the Stigma

A new exhibition opens at Dominion Gallery with a benefit auction for the Grand Avenue Club. The exhibition, “Breaking the Stigma,” presents artists whose work touches on mental health issues as a means to raise awareness and public discussion. Colleen Shoop-Kassner, author of “Facing Forward,” is the featured artist.

The Racine Art Museum is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an elegant party including a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and champagne, music, dancing, and a photo booth for spontaneous fun. Formal attire encouraged and tickets are available online.

Clothing designer/fiber artist Timothy Westbrook presents his recent work inspired by fossils, dinosaurs, sustainability practices, and a lot of repurposed material. I attended the Breaking The Stigma opening at Dominion Gallery (and Stonie Rivera was a great auctioneer) and loved it! Some of Milwaukee’s best known artists were there – Mark Eberhage and Therese (and their son Alec) of Joy Farm (Mark has a new movie out called Soul Chamber that he did with J. Karl Bogartte), Philo and Colleen Kassner (Philo can finally walk well again, after knee surgery), and performance artist Jack Eigel, who after a heart transplant was just back from London and South Africa after having represented teh U.S. in swimming at the Heart Transplant Olympics!
