Hear ye, hear ye: Polls are open.
Early voting is underway for the Nov. 3 general election.
The Milwaukee Election Commission is operating early voting sites through Sunday, Nov. 1. Milwaukee residents can vote at any of the 11 locations, regardless of where they live in the city. Voters can also register, view a sample ballot or drop off an absentee ballot during site hours at any location.
Hours vary by polling location, but unlike on Election Day, city of Milwaukee voters can visit any early voting polling place to cast their ballot. Individuals can also register to vote at any polling place, but only through Oct. 31.
Voters casting ballots during early voting should expect to use an electronic machine rather than a traditional paper ballot. The machines, in use since 2018, accommodate the varied ballots and allow voters to cast ballots at any early voting site.
Valid photo ID requirements remain in place for early voting.
Milwaukee counts early votes alongside absentee ballots at the city’s central count facility on Election Day. Early voting in Wisconsin is technically in-person absentee voting, with ballots placed into individual sealed envelopes, similar to mail-in ballots.
According to state data, Milwaukee voters cast 3,398 ballots on the first day of early voting Tuesday as the city opened 11 locations. The city also recorded 129 voter registrations and 188 absentee ballot drop-offs.
Voters should be prepared for what will appear on their ballot. The top-of-the-ticket race is between Republican Tom Tiffany and Democrat David Crowley for governor. Other statewide contests include incumbent Attorney General Josh Kaul versus Republican challenger Eric Toney, and incumbent State Treasurer John Leiber versus Democratic challenger Yee Leng Xiong. The secretary of state race features Democrat JoCasta Zamarripa, Republican Jay Schroeder and Green Party candidate Pete Karas.
Milwaukee voters will also see the race for the 4th Congressional District, where incumbent Gwen Moore faces Republican Tim Rogers and independent candidate Arthur Burks, along with state Senate and Assembly contests.
Three proposed constitutional amendments address the governor’s partial-veto power over taxes and fees, government restrictions on religious gatherings during emergencies and government programs involving discrimination or preferential treatment based on race or sex.
Hours vary by location and date. More details are available on the MEC website.
