WisDems to Restoration PAC: We’re Sorry
MADISON, Wis. — A public apology from Devin Remiker, Chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin:
We owe out-of-state billionaire Richard Uihlein and the super PAC he’s funding to elect Tom Tiffany an apology.
Last week the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel exposed that an out-of-state canvasser, here to build support for Tom Tiffany’s gubernatorial bid, hit a bicyclist and fled the scene of the crime after drinking four Buzzballz and reportedly blacking out. The criminal complaint suggests there was even an attempt to get this individual to leave the state before law enforcement was involved. WisDems called out this blatant disregard for public safety and our laws. We don’t think anyone should be above the law, and we encouraged Tom Tiffany to distance himself from Restoration PAC.
We issued a press release titled, “Tom Tiffany’s Billionaire Backers Exposed For Attempt to Cover Up Hit-And-Run” and stated that “a Wisconsinite was seriously injured by the shadowy group spending millions to support [Tom Tiffany].”
Yesterday, I received a cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action from an attorney working for Restoration of America PAC.
I want to clarify the facts and apologize for any confusion we caused.
The individual from Texas who slammed four BuzzBallz before blacking out and seriously injured a bicyclist and fled the scene was NOT an employee of Restoration PAC or the Uihleins.
He was, to say it accurately, a CONTRACTOR of the consulting firm that has been paid millions by Restoration PAC to elect Tom Tiffany. Restoration PAC is funded by the Uihleins to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. We hope that clears things up.
Additionally, Restoration of America PAC and Illinois billionaires Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein were not involved in an attempt to cover up the crime by removing this contractor from the state. It was someone at the consulting firm paid millions by Restoration of America PAC who bought a plane ticket so their contractor could flee Wisconsin.
I sincerely apologize if our press release and tweets caused any discomfort to Restoration of America PAC or Mr. and Mrs. Uihlein because we mischaracterized the nature of this relationship.
For their benefit and to ensure there is no further confusion, allow me to state it again clearly: The individual from Texas who was canvassing to support Tom Tiffany was a CONTRACTOR for Echo Canyon, a firm being paid millions under a CONTRACT, with Restoration of America PAC, which is funded with millions by the Uihlein family.
It must be a hard time to be a billionaire in America. After all, blowing tens of millions of dollars to support Tom Tiffany, a MAGA extremist who has always looked out for billionaires and big corporations instead of fighting for working Wisconsinites, seems like a riskier bet every day.
Costs are soaring, Wisconsinites are losing healthcare access because of Tom Tiffany’s votes in Congress, and when Democrats take back the US House, those billionaires won’t be able to get another tax break at the expense of working people. On top of that, Trump’s approval rating is cratering, and Tom Tiffany is so scared of reality and tough questions that he’s blocking reporters from his events. Things don’t seem to be going well for Tiffany or his billionaire backers these days.
We all know Tom Tiffany is relying on out-of-state billionaires like the Uihleins to save his campaign. New reports prove, “Three billionaires are responsible for the about two-thirds of the campaign cash raised so far by Republican candidate for governor Tom Tiffany.”
But once again, I want to be clear that in this instance, the billionaire backers of Tom Tiffany financed the PAC that CONTRACTED with the firm that CONTRACTED with the guy who drunkenly struck a bicyclist before trying to immediately leave Wisconsin.
Tiffany even praised Restoration of America PAC after we sent our initial press release out, saying, “and yeah, the money is money is crazy. Restoration PAC, who is on our side, they are putting millions of dollars in this race, and we are- we may have the most successful by the end of this the most successful fundraising campaign of any candidate that’s run for statewide office in Wisconsin.”
Tom Tiffany believes that this PAC, which CONTRACTED with a firm that CONTRACTED with the man who ran down a bicyclist, is ON HIS SIDE.
That is a crazy amount of money. But with a record as bad as Tom Tiffany’s, it takes serious cash to salvage your reputation.
I regret that my previous characterization may have given a false impression of the exact nature of the relationship between the individual who committed a hit-and-run and the relationship between the Uihleins and the person working for the firm that tried to help this individual get a flight out of the state.
Should there be any further questions about this, I am more than happy to repeat the correct statement of facts behind Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein funding a PAC, which spent millions on a firm that contracted the individual who struck a Wisconsinite with their car in the course of their duties canvassing for Tom Tiffany and then nearly left Wisconsin.
