Special Mailing Coming to Sherman Boulevard Historic District Property Owners
Owners of residences located in the Sherman Boulevard Historic District will soon be receiving an important brochure in the mail outlining key information, courtesy of the Historic Preservation Commission and Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, and Alderman DiAndre Jackson.
The detailed brochure (attached) includes a summary of requirements owners must fulfill when making changes to the exterior of a property, as well as important city contact information (and much more).
Alderman Stamper, whose 15th District includes the southerly portion of the historic district, said the mailing is a proactive effort to help owners understand what steps to follow if they are considering making any exterior changes to their property. “Changes to the exterior of your home may require approval from the Historic Preservation Commission, and the brochure provides the critical information you will need to do any project in accordance with the city’s historic preservation guidelines,” he said.
Alderman Jackson, whose 7th District includes the northern portion of the Sherman Boulevard Historic District, said any preservation-required exterior repairs or changes to a property require a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA). “There is no charge for COA applications and most applications are approved within one to two business days. Applications can be submitted and reviewed by email in coordination with Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) staff,” Alderman Jackson said.
Any projects requiring a hearing and approval from the Historic Preservation Commission will be clearly communicated and addressed by HPC staff.
“We strongly encourage property owners to take a look at the brochure when it arrives, and to contact the HPC with any questions or concerns,” Aldermen Stamper and Jackson said.

Sherman Boulevard was designated as a City of Milwaukee historic district in 1995. The district’s importance comes from its early-20th century architecture and the grand boulevard connecting Sherman and Washington Parks.
