New non-stop flights carrying travelers from Milwaukee to warmer weather started flying this week.
Southwest Airlines and the budget-carrier Frontier Airlines both began new non-stop services this week to popular vacation destinations from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.
Southwest began non-stop flights to Austin, Texas Friday. Along with being the busiest carrier operating out of Milwaukee Mitchell, Southwest is also now the only airline providing direct service to Austin. Flights will run five days a week on Boeing 737-700 airplanes.
“With this new route, we are connecting two of America’s greatest music destinations,” Airport Brian Dranzik said. “Whether it’s Texans visiting Milwaukee to attend the world’s largest music festival at Summerfest, or Milwaukee-area travelers looking to enjoy Austin’s live music scene, these new flights will be especially popular among music lovers.”
Frontier Airlines started running non-stop service to Tampa International Airport Friday. The budget carrier will carry travelers to Tampa three times a week on Airbus A320 aircraft.
“With summer travel just around the corner, we are thrilled to launch this new service at MKE, affordably connecting area consumers to Florida’s Gulf Coast,” said Josh Flyr, Frontier Airlines vice president of network and operations design, in a statement.
These flights are just the beginning, too. March is regularly the busiest time of the season for Milwaukee Mitchell. Along with trips to Texas, Southwest will run flights to a handful of popular spring break destinations including flights to spring break destinations including Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale, Sarasota and Cancun.
The airport recently launched an interactive tool to help travelers search flights out of Milwaukee. Travelers can search for flights out of Milwaukee Mitchell based on destination, carrier, time and date.
