There’s a large hidden pond on the east side of the Milwaukee River between Capitol Drive and Locust. There’s a small creek that flows out of the pond and into the river.
I walked along the creek and then around the pond a few years ago when I worked for the Wisconsin DNR. I noticed a large pile of sticks, branches, and logs on the side of the pond where the creek begins.
As I walked toward the tall pile of wood on my way back to the river, a loud “BANGGG” went off and my heart stopped for 2-3 seconds. I thought someone with a gun just shot me.
That bang turned out to be a large beaver that jumped into the water from that tall pile of wood. That pile of wood turned out to be his beaver dam. His massive tail slapped the water with an explosive “WHACKKKK” when it hit the water. That beaver wanted to scare the hell out of me and that’s exactly what he did.
Correction to post #1 – The pond is on the west side of the river.
