This week on City Beat, the weekly podcast from Urban Milwaukee, host Jeramey Jannene sits down with architect Chris Socha to discuss the redevelopment of the Grand Avenue Mall.

We open the show with a rundown of the top news affecting Milwaukee, including the $285 million Komatsu deal, new public art Downtown, a plan to save Soldiers Home and the Sherman Phoenix before diving in on downtown’s white elephant.

Socha, a principal at TKWA UrbanLab, discusses how he got the job to redesign the mall, how to design apartments on a skywalk, what exactly is a food hall and what the timeline is to transform the mall into “The Avenue.”

We end the show with a Pedestrian Observation, a quick look at an urban planning idea that can help build a better city. This week we explore the use of a pattern language as a design methodology, something TKWA uses to create great places.

The show is recorded live on Tuesday’s at Riverwest Radio. If you want to listen live, tune it to 104.1 FM or RiverwestRadio.com Tuesday’s at 3:30 p.m. Or subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or a number of other podcast platforms.
