  1. Virginia Small says:

“The history of the area, including the long-running success of Goolsby’s shows that Milwaukee can generate its own homegrown entertainment district without the involvement of mega-capital.” For sure.

The Bucks have cited the Arena District in Columbus as a model. It has no bar mall (“Live! block”) as they propose. Instead Columbus has 17 bars and eateries spread over 75 acres of new development, a fraction of such establishments in Milwaukee’s existing Arena/Convention District. And developer Nationwide bought the mostly vacant land, instead of getting it for free, and built a real park.

There are many ways Westown’s new “master developer/uber landlord” could help it become a welcoming neighborhood. Building a dozen redundant taverns, especially chains, is no way to win friends.

Bucks owners could look to Detroit Red Wing’s plans for a “deconstructed” New Urbanist approach to their arena and ancillary development. And if Milwaukee wants to build its sustainability cred, they’ll push them to make it all really green. And if anyone wants it to succeed, they’ll start with real community engagement–the gold standard.

I’ve only been to Major Goolsby’s a few times, but every time I’ve gone in, people have been very friendly; it’s easy to sit at the bar and talk with anyone! Thanks for the history, Michael Horne!

  3. Stephen Thiel says:

in the early 1990’s, MG’s had a manager named “Deuce”. Deuce met an untimely end at the hands of his girlfriend’s ex-husband. Given MG’s prominence and Deuce’s elevated status as its manager, it was a sensational story, to say the least. Any more info on that, Mr. Horne?
