  1. I think the writer missed a key story in Clinton’s visit. As a response to a threat by the Coalition for Justice to disrupt her talk, she met privately with Maria and Nate Hamilton and pledged to pressure the Department of Justice to investigate the police murder of Dontre Hamilton. In her remarks, Ms. Clinton recognized Maria Hamilton from the stage and pointed out that she is one presidential candidate who is not afraid to say “BlackLivesMatter.”

Clinton and the Democrats have been pushed by the #BlackLivesMatter movement to go beyond their rhetoric on inequality to address police violence in our cities. Clinton’s speech adroitly included mothers who have lost their children to violence as part of her “women and family” agenda — as suggested by Maria Hamilton. Clinton also sidestepped police culpability by lumping police violence into all urban violence. I suspect #BlackLivesMatter activists will not let her or other candidates off the hook as the campaign progresses.

There were far more than 250 people at her talk and for me, someone who would never vote for her, she was surprisingly effective. I think what we saw in Milwaukee and earlier in the Bernie Sanders disruption, is that Democrats are going to have to address more substantive issues to the black community, like police violence and mass incarceration. These are issues that can split Democrats and how their candidates handle it bears watching.

  2. a couple notes. the concourse area where the second overflow space was located opened in February 1972, and the parts of the Student Union building dates back to 1956 (pre-UWM). in addition to this overflow, the Union’s Cinema had over 300 guests. the Wisconsin Room’s capacity is over 750 depending on space layouts.
