Milwaukee needs more families to return to the city. Many are still leaving. :/

“Such entertainment districts did not survive the great recession, he said. After that effort failed, Joe Zilber declared that the Pabst site “was going to be my legacy.”…

One would think Mayor Barrett might appreciate how mixed-use developments can dramatically succeed–while single-use packaged “entertainment districts” are often doomed to fail. He lobbied hard for PabstCity and predicted civic calamity when it was rejected. That vote was based in part on data showing it would over-saturate a healthy market of existing bars and restaurants.

Now the mayor is lobbying fiercely for a Bucks-owned “entertainment” mall, ostensibly to finally give people “a reason to come downtown.” More than 60 restaurants and bars within a half-mile of Bradley Center apparently don’t count. Nor do all the other hospitality/entertainment options, including one-third more performing arts venue seats than Chicago.

One reason Jackson’s “is killing it,” besides providing a good product, is that it’s the hub of a neighborhood in a market that’s not flooded.

Why are city officials dead-set on shooting the downtown restaurant/bar market in the foot. Memo to CC: the state’s arena bill guaranteed the Bucks won’t leave. Now you can think about all downtown businesses–not just the Bucks.
