Are Abrahamson’s Days as Chief Justice Numbered?

Constitutional amendment on April referendum would result in her being replaced as chief justice. Even if it fails, her salary will be reduced.

  1. Bill Marsh says:

Michael Horne states the Wisconsin League of Women Voters is non-partisan. WLWV is not non-partisan. It is clearly a leftist, partisan organization that fronts as non-partisan by having supposed journalists continue to deem them to be non-partisan. This is an organization that is against voter ID (they were a plaintiff challenging the law), against private school vouchers, for higher taxes, and anti-mine (just what I could find on their web site in less than five minutes). What makes them non-partisan when they are taking partisan, left-leaning, positions on so many important issues? I have no problem with their taking a stand on political issues. But if they do so, by definition they become partisan and should be identified truthfully.

As to the April referendum- Where else do make the most senior person in an entity the head of the entity? The whole concept is mindless (literally no thinking), especially considering the importance of the supreme court.

  2. TF says:

Federal courts of appeals choose their chief judge by seniority. Outstanding jurists like Henry Friendly, Richard Posner, Frank Easterbrook and Alex Kozinski (none of whom are liberals) have become chief judges due to the federal seniority system. In Wisconsin, we’ve seen chief justices like Heffernan and Abrahamson, who (no matter what you think of their ideological leanings) have garnered great respect. This is a system that works, and one which doesn’t need to be “fixed.”

  3. Tom D says:

The post of President Pro Tempore of the US Senate is another position given to the longest serving member of the majority party (Orrin Hatch today). It is not only a symbolic position; it is 3rd in line to succeed the President.

  4. Bill Kurtz says:

Vote no, unless you want Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce choosing our chief justice.

  5. Bill Marsh says:

Federal Courts of Appeals also rotate their judges out of the chief judge position by age 70. As to those that have served as Chief Justice in Wisconsin, so what? Some people do not have the same opinion of Abrahamson as you have. The system as it stands is mindless, it is not democratic, and it is not progressive. Vote yes for intelligence, democracy and progress.
