A Tale of Two Doctors

It’s the Monday after Super Bowl XLVIII, a.k.a. the day parents across the country continue to fall in love with that delightful Bruno Mars. Speaking of Mars (let us not speak of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), the singer is set to headline the opening day of Summerfest 2014. Just let the thought of summer—summer!—sink in for a moment…

Done? Okay. Here are five shows that are happening this week, current lack of anything resembling summer be damned.

The professional ’60s worshippers of Dr. Dog made a splash back in 2008 with the excellent album Fate, which contained the gorgeous “Hang On.” The band has been dutifully plugging away ever since, churning out album after album of agreeable psych-rock (and paying plenty of visits to Milwaukee). Dr. Dog’s latest album is the sprawling B-Room, which was recorded in the band’s newly built studio. Saint Rich opens the show.

Trey Anastasio Band at Pabst

Does Trey Anastasio need any introduction? Probably not, seeing that this show is currently sold-out. But for those who aren’t familiar with Anastasio, all you need to know is that he’s the singer and guitarist for Phish. Still reading? Well, then you’re probably already going to the show, and you probably consider Anastasio something of a living legend. Enjoy!

Thursday, February 6
Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio at Wehr Hall

The phrase “living legend” gets tossed around a lot these days (whereas we place the names before you with thoughtful consideration), but there’s really no other way to describe Dr. Lonnie Smith. A master of the Hammond organ, Smith has played on more than 70 classic jazz, blues, and R&B albums; at 71, he recently released a new record, In The Beginning. Beyond Smith’s supernatural musical chops, his general air of mystery is a big selling point. His trademark turban and beard are strictly for style, and his “Doctor” title is self-appointed. Milwaukee will get a rare chance to puzzle over Smith at this can’t-miss Alverno Presents show.

Mason Jennings at Turner Hall

In a musical landscape that changes every two weeks—who was Bruno Mars, again?—Mason Jennings is a reassuring constant. The singer-songwriter has been at it for more than 15 years, slowly perfecting his confessional style of indie-folk with each successive album. His latest—his 10^th studio album—is Always Been, a collection of songs that thankfully gives the word “mature” a good name.

2 Chainz at The Rave

It’s funny what a name change can do for someone’s career. Need an example? Look no further than Tauheed Epps, who found a remarkable amount of mainstream success after changing his stage name from Tity Boi to 2 Chainz in 2011. These days, it’s hard not to run into one of 2 Chainz’ tracks from last year’s B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time, especially “Feds Watching” featuring Pharrell Williams or “Netflix” featuring Fergie. Pusha-T and August Alsina round out tonight’s bill.
