Broadway Baby Dinner Theatre

A scene from “Remember Me?” opening at Broadway Baby this Friday.

In 1990, Broadway Baby Dinner Theatre first flipped on the stage lights at 5132 West Mill Road, offering a delectable new theater option for those on Milwaukee’s north side and in Brown Deer. In this day and age of countless performance companies competing for business, Broadway Baby still offers a unique chance to relax, eat a delicious meal, have a few drinks, and watch an intimate and professional show.

Beginning Friday, Broadway Baby will be working with new directors, cast, and staff on a fantastic new season of comedies, farces, and mysteries. Remember Me? by Sam Bobrick opens  April 15 and runs through May 22. As one of the actors in the show, I admit that six weekends is a very long run, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. It will be refreshing to have so many chances to tweak my performance and really dig into my role. It also gives the greater Milwaukee audience plenty of chances to enjoy this one-of-a-kind theater experience.

I’m a Cleveland native and moved here about four years ago, so I didn’t know much about Broadway Baby before I auditioned. I have worked with several theaters across town, and each experience has helped me grow as an actor. However, I was ready to branch out and try something new, and the re-launch of Broadway Baby seemed like the perfect fit. Once I stepped inside the place, I was hooked. The bar section has a charm that reminds me of a place like “Cheers”—where everybody knows your name! On nights when there is no live performance, the bar section features karaoke, DJs, and a lively, friendly atmosphere.

The adjoining theater is a cozy, 80-seat space. As an actor, it’s always fun to be close to the audience and interact with the crowd.

Brian and his “fantasy wife” Tori in “Remember Me?”

Remember Me? is set in the Manhattan apartment of Brian and Mary Hanson. On the surface it appears the best friends-turned-empty-nesters have it all. Then one  morning, their lives are turned upside down. To Mary’s surprise, her old college boyfriend shows up and Brian is overcome with jealousy. So much so that he even hires Tori, a sexy young actress, to pose as his fantasy wife in hopes of making Mary equally jealous.

With the help of these unexpected house guests, Mary and Brian eventually find their way back to romance and true love.

I am excited to take part in this new era for Broadway Baby, but I’m not alone.

“What Broadway Baby means to me is a chance to bring a spark to the audience. I always feel camaraderie among my fellow actors, and I can sense the audience pulling for me as I take to the stage, and bring life to a character that was once only words on paper,” says fellow cast member Jerry Hearle.

Actress Katie Jenkins adds, “It’s an honor to be a part of this theatre company, and this is my first professional show! I think that this is unique not only because it’s a dinner theatre, but also because it is a very intimate and small space. The show is wonderful for both teens and adults, and tackles some of the complexities of marriage and relationships.”

We hope the Milwaukee community will embrace Broadway Baby’s resurgence, and come out to support a show outside of the downtown area. It’s been a busy rehearsal process, and we are ready to put on a great show!

Remember Me? is the Broadway Baby customer appreciation production, so all seats are just $40. Show-only tickets are also available. Remember Me? runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm, April 15th thru May 22nd. Dinner is served 2 hours prior to each show. Call 414-212-5132 for reservations.
