Love Songs – Day 6
Nostalgic twists and turns often remind us of what true love is or could’ve been, depending on our capacity, tolerance and imagination. Here, two TCD staffers share sentiments about some of their favorite sounds from the present and back in the day.
TCD Senior Writer Erin Petersen‘s Picks:
“Only To Other People” — The Cookies: A sweet and innocent lament for the jilted that’s sung so ferociously it brings me to tears. The Detroit Cobras did an amazing rock ‘n’ roll cover of this song the last time they played in Milwaukee, and it brought the house down.
“Papa Was A Rodeo” — The Magnetic Fields: “I see that kiss-me pucker forming / but maybe you should plug it with a beer…” Pure gold.
“Cosmic Dancer” — T. Rex: A long, long time ago, my pal Dave and I used to hang out on his bedroom floor and sing along to Electric Warrior. In those days, we made preposterous plans (first Paris, then Rome!) without the foresight to know that they might never come to fruition. Gosh, it was bliss.

“Kim The Waitress” — Material Issue: power pop purity of longing for girl who brings your daily elixir of life to the table with a smile.
“Ceremony” — Joy Division: …utterly gut-wrenching. your soul twists, your heart drops. you want more … everything about love personified in a song.
“True Love Ways” — Buddy Holly: I also dare you not to cry when Gary Busey is singing the song for his wife in the Buddy Holly Story … I double-dog dare you.
