Written by local writer, actor and storyteller Beth Monhollen, Boulevard Theatre’s Stations of the Cross follows the traditional ‘stations’ of Jesus suffering as told through monologues and short scenes about the restaurant service industry. Often witty and occasionally dark, Cross provides many, many laughs and insights into human behavior.

During a short talkback session, Monhollen offered that it was Boulevard’s  Artistic Director Mark Bucher who suggested the idea of illustrating the Via Crucis through tales from the restaurant business. Monhollen wrote the play this past winter, and in spring the cast rehearsed for just two short weeks before opening the show April 29.

With most productions, this time frame might render an awkward, unpolished show. However, in this production Monhollen’s material and the talents of the cast make Stations of the Cross into a well-crafted and fleshed out performance. The ensemble, all of whom have actually worked in the restaurant service industry, spend most of their time on stage. With very little down-time, every cast member bears witness to each illuminated station.

The entire cast (Scott Dennis, Katie Merriman, Shemagne O’Keefe, Mia Shellenbarger, Kate Sherry and Paul Madden) give wonderfully straightforward performances. Beth Monhollen as actress is just as lovely in the debut of her own play. Fans familiar with Mark Bucher’s pre-show chats were delighted to see him on stage during the show as well.

While Stations of the Cross tackles some heavy matter, it remains an accessible piece. Even to someone who has little or no familiarity with Jesus’ stations or with working in a restaurant can recognize the story’s poignancy. Monhollen’s writing, Bucher’s direction and the talent of the entire cast help make Stations of the Cross one of Milwaukee’s most satisfying shows of the spring season.

Stations of the Cross runs through May 31 at the Boulevard Theatre, located at 2252 South Kinnickinnic in Bay View. For more info call 414.744.5757 or visit www.boulevardtheatre.com.
