Whitney Gould Day (May 29th, 2008)
Mayor Tom Barrett today utilized his power of mayoral proclamation to declare it Whitney M. Gould Day in honor of the long-time Milwaukee Journal Sentinel urban landscape and architecture columnist who recently accepted a buy-out from Journal Communications and now serves as a Commissioner on the City Plan Commission.
The City of Milwaukee joins the Mayor’s Urban Design Award honorees in recognizing Whitney M. Gould’s celebrated journalistic contributions to Milwaukee’s architecture and urban landscape on May 29, 2008; and,
WHEREAS, Whitney M. Gould served as the urban landscape and architecture critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from 1995 until her retirement in 2007, focusing her analysis on the City’s architecture, urban plans, land use, and historic preservation, the culmination of her honorable career in journalism; and,
WHEREAS, Whitney M. Gould pursued her passion for architecture and design throughout her academic career, with graduate work in architecture at Columbia University and further study in architectural history and the history of cities through the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University; and,
WHEREAS, Whitney M. Gould’s reporting and thought provoking commentary garnered awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Scripps-Howard Foundation, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the Milwaukee Press Club; and,
WHEREAS, The City of Milwaukee commends Whitney M. Gould for her exemplary citizenship and contributions to the Milwaukee community and wishes her continued success in her future pursuits;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TOM BARRETT, Mayor of the City of Milwaukee, on the occasion of the 11th Annual Mayor’s Urban Design Awards, a setting in which the City’s architectural accomplishments are celebrated, am honored to recognize a long-time architectural figurehead and do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 29, 2008 to be
