MADISON –  The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Senator Ron Johnson missed 60% of the hearings held by the homeland security committee and the subcommittees to which he was assigned during his first four years in office.

“Chairman Johnson is the worst kind of hypocrite,” said Kory Kozloski, executive director of the state Democratic Party. “He says national security is his most important issue. But until 2015, he barely showed up to work on critical committee hearings regarding our homeland security.”

Johnson’s early committee attendance record includes missing hearings on homegrown terror, terrorist travel, and three separate hearings on border security. The Senator even found raising campaign dollars more important than keeping Americans safe, managing to attend fundraisers on the same days he skipped homeland security hearings.

Johnson continues to beat the drum on national security now that it is a hot-button issue during an election year, but his own campaign confirms the senator only attended 83 hearings out of a total 207 from 2011 to 2014.

“If he really cared that much about keeping us safe,” Kozloski said, “he’d have done his job when the voters weren’t looking, not just when his job was at risk.”

  1. David Nelson says:

Fair enough. From what I have heard, Johnson is unlikely to understand much of what he encounters in Congress. His time is probably better spent elsewhere. That does, however, call into question whether he should be holding Senate office.

  2. AG says:

It’s weird that the DPW is calling out Johnson by using an article that shows his democrat opponent had nearly the same record.

  3. Vincent Hanna says:

It’s going to be an ugly race. I guess it already is. Lots of bickering over committee hearing attendance and who’s more responsible for the VA scandal.
