MADISON – On this date in 1975, General Vang Pao and many brave veterans who fought beside him in battle left Laos in the wake of the American pull out of Vietnam. General Vang Pao, along with thousands of Hmong refugees, migrated to America. The U.S. Congress and Wisconsin Legislature have named May 14 Hmong-Lao Appreciation Day in honor of the sacrifices and risks taken by those brave veterans.

“This is an important part of American history and I am happy to celebrate the contributions on those brave Hmong and Lao veterans who fought for our country,” said Rep. Jonathan Brostoff (D-Milwaukee). “Hmong-Lao Appreciation Day is also a celebration of contributions the Hmong and Lao communities continue to make. They are vital parts of the rich tapestry of our society.”

“In light of recent violence against members of the Hmong community, I would like to ask everyone to reflect on this Hmong-Lao Appreciation Day,” Brostoff continued. “To the Hmong and Lao community, my deepest thank you for all you have done and all you continue to do for our state and our country.”
