The Public Works Committee is responsible for physical services provided by the city such as street and alley maintenance, waste collection, disposal and recycling, sewer, water and flood control projects, assessments, public buildings, land and waterways.
Public Works Committee meetings start at 9:00 a.m. and are held in the Room 301-B, City Hall, unless otherwise noted.

As labor markets tighten, Milwaukee’s teens are not being prepared to successfully transition out of high school and into the workforce. Low skill-levels and high unemployment stand in the way of even the best students.
ArtWorks for Milwaukee, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that hires and pays an hourly wage to teams of teenage apprentices for each of its programs, who work with a local, professional Lead Artists to create visual, literary, and mixed media art projects.
This collaboration uses an art project- complete with a budget, deadlines, and performance reviews- to teach valuable job and life skills to teenagers that need it most. All of our programming promotes teamwork, tolerance for diversity, project management, and prepares young people to successfully enter the workforce in any industry.

Although, we just had a basic setup for our Park(ing) Day installation, we did have a great turnout of interested citizens stop by to take part in our efforts to look at the urban hardscape in a new light. Next year we hope to involve a larger group of urban advocates so we can bring more creative ideas to our parking spot including sample bike parking, and public art. The Bicycle Master Plan was presented to the Public Safety Committee at the September 16th, 2010 meeting. Its goal is to encourage safe riding, increase ridership, and to make bicycling safe for beginning riders. Alderman Kovac, a sponsor of the legislation, put it well saying that the plan, “is for more timid riders.” To accomplish the goals laid out in the plan it proposes an eventual $8.63 million investment in new bike infrastructure, as well as support for safety and enforcement programs. At this point no funding has been budgeted as the plan is simply a guide for the city to follow when paving projects come up. Further, it will assist the city in obtaining grants as they become available. New infrastructure will include striping new bike lanes, building bike boulevards, adding new trails, as well as innovative new concepts such as bike boxes, raised bike lanes, and a pilot bike-sharing system.
Dave Schlabowske, City of Milwaukee Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator explained that “the bicycle story is really a good one,” as ridership in Milwaukee has risen following the previous bicycle plan.
Alderman Witkowski asked about the potential side benefits of bike lanes, in particular he was hinting at its traffic calming impacts. Jeff Polenske, City Engineer, explained that adding bike lanes “provides a little bit greater order,” and that “some look at it as a means of traffic calming.” Alderman Witkowski followed up that his experience has been that the perceived narrowing caused by adding bike lanes has gotten people to drive a little closer (slow down) to the speed limit.
The plan was approved unanimously and will now go before the full Common Council.
The Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) administers Milwaukee’s historic preservation ordinance, adopted in 1981, which provides certain kinds of legal protection for buildings or sites that have been declared historic by the Common Council. The HPC is responsible for designating historic landmarks and historic districts and for approving Certificates of Appropriateness (COAs) for permission to alter historic buildings.
The HPC meets monthly on Mondays in City Hall, Room 301A, 200 E. Wells Street at 4:00 P.M. unless otherwise indicated.
