WisDOT Receives Regional Transportation Award for I-894 Project, Milwaukee County
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) awarded the I-894 resurfacing project in Milwaukee County with a regional America’s Transportation Award in the category of ‘Best Use of Technology & Innovation, Medium Project.’ Watch the AASHTO video announcing the I-894 project.
This section of Interstate 894 in Milwaukee County is one of the busiest stretches of highway in Wisconsin and the pavement needed to be replaced. As an innovative way to complete the resurfacing operations, construction teams closed entire directions of the interstate over the course of multiple weekends in 2024 and 2025. These directional weekend closures, while temporarily inconvenient, allowed crews to work around the clock without interruptions caused by passing vehicles, which dramatically shortened the project timeline and significantly increased safety for the construction teams. Crews used multiple paving machines simultaneously – called the echelon paving technique – to expedite the resurfacing operations and ensure a continuous smooth ride for travelers. These closures were also more cost-effective as construction teams streamlined their work leading to lower labor costs and reduced project delays, which ultimately saves the taxpayer money.
“This recognition reflects the exceptional collaboration, innovation, and commitment that went into the I-894 project,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said. “Our teams and industry partners found a smarter way to resurface this heavily traveled corridor with an innovative approach to get more work done in less time while improving safety for both workers and motorists. This project demonstrates how thoughtful planning, and strong partnerships can help us deliver critical infrastructure improvements safely, efficiently and with greater value for Wisconsin taxpayers.”
The multi-year resurfacing project began in fall 2023 and extended along I-894 between 84th Street and 35th Street in Milwaukee County. The $61 million project was completed in summer 2025.
