WILL Statement on Wisconsin Supreme Court’s School Choice Decision

By - Dec 13th, 2023 03:21 pm

The News: The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) has released a statement after the Wisconsin Supreme Court denied an original action petition seeking to end Wisconsin’s widely popular and successful school choice programs.

The Quote: WILL President and General Counsel, Rick Esenberg, stated, “Wisconsin’s parental choice programs have been instrumental in providing educational freedom and better academic outcomes to thousands of Wisconsin families. The now-denied petition filed with the Wisconsin Supreme Court was plagued with misleading, misinformed, and nonsensical legal arguments. The unanimous Court was right to reject the case. If choice opponents try again, WILL stands ready to defend these critical programs for Wisconsin children and their families.”

Additional Background: On November 13th, WILL filed an amicus brief and a motion to intervene in a lawsuit seeking to overturn Wisconsin’s widely popular and successful school choice programs. WILL’s motion was filed on behalf of 22 clients—representing parents of students enrolled in choice and charter schools, several schools across Wisconsin, and organizations that advocate for educational freedom.

If parents and church communities refuse to spend the money to support the religious education of their children, why is it the responsibility of the State to pay for it? When religious schools accept students who are not members of their congregation, they are abandoning their sacred duty to instill in their children the religious principles that that has defined them for centuries.
