WBB Suffers Overtime Setback at Creighton, 80-74

OMAHA, Neb. – Playing in its second overtime game of the season, Marquette fell 80-74 to Creighton on Sunday at D.J. Sokol Arena. The loss snapped MU’s five-game win streak.

Four Golden Eagles were in double figures led by Skylar Forbes‘ 21 points. CU countered with a combined 48 from Ava Zediker (25) and Grace Boffeli (23).

Scoreless through the first two-and-a-half minutes, Marquette took a 5-1 lead following back-to-back buckets from Charia Smith and Lee Volker. The lead lasted just two minutes following five unanswered from Zediker. After entering the game midway through the period, Forbes scored nine of MU’s final 14 points of the quarter as the Golden Eagles led 21-14.

Following five quick points from the Bluejays to start the second, Halle Vice answered a CU 3-pointer with one of her own from the top of the key. Two minutes later a 6-0 spurt in 75 seconds ensued for MU and forced Creighton to call its first timeout with Marquette’s lead up to 10 at 30-20. The Bluejays answered back with seven unanswered.

MU was held scoreless for the final two minutes of the half and saw its lead trimmed to two heading into the half.

Back-to-back triples from Volker and Kennedi Perkins opened up the second half for Marquette. Creighton began to go back to Zediker for answers but MU went back inside to Vice to maintain the eight-point advantage. Keeping CU at arms length through the quarter, a quick outlet pass off a rebound from Jaidynn Mason set up Perkins for an and-one with less than a second on the clock to give Marquette a 56-46 lead heading into the fourth.

Volker opened the period with a layup but Creighton quickly struck with a 7-0 run and MU hit a timeout to settle things. Forbes responded with an and-one. CU continued to chip away until a 3-pointer by Neleigh Gessert with 17.1 seconds tied the game at 67-all. Volker’s final attempt at the buzzer caught the front end of the iron.

With under three minutes left in overtime, three consecutive possessions with a bucket at the rim gave the Bluejays a three-point lead.
