UWM nursing prof receives Fulbright award to support work in health equity

MILWAUKEE _ Heidi Luft of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award to the Dominican Republic in the field of nursing and public health. Luft will conduct research and teach a course at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo as part of a project to build capacity for collaborative research on health equity in that nation.

She will teach a course to help Dominican researchers develop effective collaborative teams to advance their research related to social justice and health equity. Luft also will work on a personal research project aimed at reducing gender-based violence in the Dominican Republic.

An assistant professor in UWM’s College of Nursing, Luft is one of more than 800 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research, and/or provide expertise abroad for the 2020-2021 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as record of service and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields.

Since 1946, the Fulbright Program, funded through an annual appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Department of State, has been the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.

Fulbright alumni have included 59 who have been awarded the Nobel Prize, 84 who have received Pulitzer Prizes and 37 who have served as a head of state or government.
