MADISON, Wis. — Right-wing billionaires, special interests, and ethically challenged politicos seem to be coalescing around Tom Tiffany as their preferred Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate, based on the publicized list of hosts of a Friday fundraiser.

“It’s really no surprise that Tom Tiffany is gaining the support of right-wing Illinois billionaires, special interests and ethically challenged political operatives,” commented Mike Browne, deputy director of A Better Wisconsin Together. “After all, he’s been working for them throughout his political career both in Wisconsin and in Washington D.C.”

Among those listed as hosts of the high dollar Tiffany Friday fundraiser are:

  • Right-wing Illinois billionaire Liz Uihlein, who has doled out huge sums of campaign cash for right-wing politicians and along with her husband Dick Uihlein is among the largest supporters of right-wing causes in the nation;
  • Longtime Wisconsin and Washington D.C. Republican political operative Reince Priebus, who helped facilitate access to top Republicans, including Donald Trump, to the perpetrators of a fake elector scheme that has resulted in criminal charges and convictions for many of the conspirators;
  • Disgraced former Wisconsin Assembly Speaker and lobbyist Scott Jensen, who was charged with felony misconduct in public office and after years of legal wrangling and venue shopping cut a plea deal on ethics charges, who now works as a private school voucher industry consultant;
  • Scandal ridden right-wing operative Eric O’Keefe, who was a key figure at the center of investigations of political corruption and violations of Wisconsin campaign finance and ethics laws in the early 2010s.

Tiffany has taken numerous actions in public office that have benefitted the bottom lines and personal interests of his cabal of right-wing backers, including:

  • Voting to put billionaires first. When given the choice, Tom Tiffany voted to cut Medicaid, increase healthcare premiums, take food assistance away from low income kids, imperil rural hospitals, and stick Wisconsin taxpayers with over $280 million in higher costs in future state budgets, all to give billionaires another tax break;
  • Calling to throw out the votes of millions of Wisconsinites in 2020 because he didn’t like the election results and bought into debunked conspiracy theories. He not only supported a wild lawsuit that even the right-wing majority on the U.S. Supreme Court wouldn’t take up, he voted against certifying 2020 election results and years later was still refusing to acknowledge the truth that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election;
  • Voting for increasing taxpayer funding of less accountable private voucher schools while also voting for the largest cuts to public education in state history while in the state legislature. And he hasn’t stopped there, in Washington D.C., Tiffany has sponsored legislation to eliminate the Department of Education;
  • Authoring bills to protect politicians like himself and his campaign supporters from accountability. When fellow Republicans and big business special interests were alleged to have run afoul of state ethics and campaign finance laws, Tom Tiffany authored legislation to eliminate the state Government Accountability Board and to change the law and exempt politicians like himself from future, similar investigations of political corruption. He was quoted as saying he hoped one of the bills would be his “legacy.”
